The Transport Division of The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) Undertaking of the Brihanmumbai Mahanagarpalika provides public transport services to the commuters in Greater Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Mira Road/Bhayander up to Thane areas. On an average 2.9 million passengers travel daily through 63,700 trips operated on 505 bus routes with the help of 3800 eco-friendly buses. These buses cover approximately 6.42 lakh kilometers per day. The entire operation is managed through 27 bus depts, 51 bus stations and 112 bus terminals / chowkies.
The authorities of BEST have recognized the need to redevelop the existing public bus depots and stations in Mumbai to providing all the facilities including EV charging stations and for the passengers as well as utilize its properties in a more prudent and profitable manner to earn extra revenue.
The apparent prerequisite of the redevelopment process would be to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the existing public bus depots and stations in Mumbai. CRISIL Risk and Infrastructure Solutions Limited, has been entrusted with the study.
Our tasks in the process have been to:
- Conduct a reconnaissance survey for the 29 bus depots and 58 bus stations across the city.
- Conduct a detailed survey for the selected 10 bus depots and 15 bus stations to study in detail. This also included land use survey within 200 m radius abutting the depot/station area.
- Further prototype designs have been prepared for the selected bus depot and bus station to accommodate upgraded facilities for the staff and passengers as well as provide EV charging facilities for the upcoming EV Buses in the Greater Mumbai city.
